Here are a few tips on how to cut kitchen worktops:
Please note - Kitchen Worktop Fitters will not be held responsible and accepts no liability for any damages to persons or goods from taking guidance from the following advice -
Basic Safety Advice: Always wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment). A good industry standard dust mask, ear defenders and protective glasses as a minimum. Secure all worktops onto a stable platform as per No6.
Attention! Remember when using a circular saw these are very powerful tools. The blade rotates at a high rpm so it is vital that the saw is held with two hands at all times. The danger is that if the saw is held lightly it can catch the timber and suddenly become a wheel and literally run up off the worktop and up the operators leg or body.
Also worth remembering never to put your fingers on the underside of the worktop to move the worktop while the saw is in place.
Now enjoy some good advice on how to cut kitchen worktops
1.Using a circular saw always cut a worktop with the topside (laminate or finished face) facing downwards (unless your saw is equipped with a track)
2.Always start the cut at the edge that will be the final front edge once the kitchen worktop is in place
3.Use a sharp (fine cut) circular/skill saw to cut all straight cuts
4.Clamp a straight piece of timber to the worktop to create a straight edge for your saw to run against
5.Use a jig saw with reversed teeth for curved sink and hob cut outs
6. Make sure the worktop is supported well! Ideally two lengths of suitable thickness timber should be laid across a pair of trestles then the kitchen worktop laid onto these. This will provide a stable platform and allow the worktop to be supported at whatever interval it is cut providing the depth of the saw blade is kept to minimum so not to cut too deep into the supporting timbers remembering to cut deep enough to cut through the worktop material!!!
7. Trimming and sticking of laminate edges - Firstly cut a length of laminate edging to the approximate size of the required length allowing a little extra for trimming. Using contact adhesive on both sides stick the strip into position. Allow 20 min to dry then using snips, clip the waste material off of the front and back edges again leaving approx 1 mm of material overhanging. The edging strips are normally wider than the worktop don't worry these will be trimmed on the underside after. It is important to make sure the top edge of the strip is flush with the top of the laminate worktop.
Using a file gently file back the excess material on the front edge and the same on the back edge.
To trim the underside attach a roller trimmer to a router and trim the excess material away.
Joining kitchen worktops with a masons mitre, creating curves or neat cuts around under mounted sinks......
Because of the skill level required, the cost of the equipment and risk and safety reasons we feel it is better that no 6. is left to the professionals...Sorry!
Hopefully the above points on how to cut kitchen worktops will help you cut and install your own worktop.
